Biography
The Russian violinist Ekaterina Frolova is a real bundle of energy, a veritable whirlwind. She prefers the most difficult pieces, not out of competitive ambition, but for the pure pleasure of playing her instrument. After graduating as a soloist from the famous Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Ekaterina Frolova moved to Vienna in 2009 to continue her career. But she also loves performing on stage, where she quickly wins the hearts of her audience.
Ekaterina Frolova trained as a violinist at the conservatory in her hometown of St. Petersburg under Antonina Kazarina. She later moved to Vienna, where she completed postgraduate studies with Michael Frischenschlager at the University of Music and Performing Arts (MDW). She also gained inspiration from masterclasses with Zakhar Bron, Igor Oistrach and others. She has won prizes at the Louis Spohr Competition in Weimar (1998), the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (2002), the Fritz Kreisler Competition in Vienna (2010) and the Osaka International Music Competition (2012). She performs with orchestras in Europe, Russia and China. She also cultivates chamber music, for example with pianist Vesselin Stanev or in the Vienna Vision Trio piano trio, which she co-founded. Ekaterina Frolova has been a member of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra since 2015 and of the Vienna Philharmonic since 2018. Since 2024, she has been an assistant professor of violin performance at the University of Music and Performing Arts (MDW) in Vienna. She plays a Nicola Gagliano violin from 1755.
